Machu Picchu to Cusco

After our day visiting the ruins we stayed the night in the very bustling centre of Machu Picchu. The following morning was a much needed leisurely start after many early mornings. Around mid morning we boarded the train back to Ollantaytambo then transferred by bus to Cusco to the Novotel we had previously stayed in. It was a race to the laundry up the road for most of us then a brief rest before heading out to eat. The following day we met our guide who took us around some of the historic sights of Cusco all revolving around the Incas and Spanish who had conquered the Incas. They still weren’t as smart as the Incas when it came to strong architecture.
Some of us had a very enjoyable lunch at the Irish Pub then some of us girls had a wander about the shops. Beautiful alpaca products everywhere.
The Incas built this for religious and astronomical purposes and took 70 yrs to build with 20,000 men,  known as Sacsayhuaman. This is only a very small section of it.

120 tonne rock on the corner.
The Inca Fountains where the Incas worshiped most things in nature the Sun being the main one so was named the Temple of the Sun.This photo of a monastery was actually built by the Spanish after they destroyed most of  the Inca buildings. There was enough left to get an idea of how it all worked.
The new Cusco. Has gone from 40,000 to 500,000 people. Their main income is tourism then farming.
Our final visit was to the Catholic Cathedral which was built by the Incas but were slaves to the Spanish in doing so. Everyone agreed this out did anything they had ever seen in the way if Cathedrals. Very opulent and it shelters many canvas oil paintings as well as artworks of gold and silver sculptures etc. No photos allowed.
